For the past several months, I’ve been working on a book with some fellow Duct Tape Marketing colleagues – and what an experience! I had the opportunity to interview some genuine thought leaders who gave me very practical advice about how to become a thought leader. Writing a book is a daunting task, but when you collaborate with excellent people it is also a rewarding task.

The book is called Do Leadership, A Step by Step Guide to “Doing” Thought Leadership for Solopreneurs & Small Business Owners. I know, strange name. As we began our process, we talked about the fact that “thought leadership” is a worn out phrase. But while the phrase might be worn out, the concept is not. Thought leadership is sharing your expertise and your point of view, which builds your credibility in your market space. And the good news is that you’re already sharing your expertise with people every day – if you weren’t, you wouldn’t still be in business.

You won’t have to spend hours doing research and coming up with something completely new – you already know more about how and why to do things than your customers do. You are constantly learning about your field and staying current. In other words, you are already a thought leader in your local area. All you have to do is educate people on what you already know.

When people buy from you, they go through a process: first they have to know/find you, and then like you. Then comes trusting you and trying you out; if you get that far with a prospective customer, they’ll then buy from you. Providing thought leadership moves them through that cycle almost all at once. They read or hear what you know, and if you resonate with them, you get know, like, trust, and try all in one!

The book helps you find your voice and then helps you to determine how and where to share that voice. We know it sounds scary and like a lot of work, but that’s why we broke it down for you – we believe in thought leadership and want you to use it to benefit your business.
