If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself – especially when it’s your business on the line. But sometimes it’s better to accept that you can’t do it all. Marketing is typically the first place most business owners realize they struggle, which is why many businesses have made hiring a marketing agency their marketing strategy.
If you’re one of those smart business owners, congratulations!
I’ll let you in on an industry secret – we have favorite clients who make our job fun and easy, and clients who make our job feel more like work. Here are the top 5 ways to be a more educated consumer of marketing services and become your agency’s favorite client.
Know what you want and have realistic expectations for getting there.
This seems simple, but it’s easy to get carried away when setting marketing goals. Food cooked in a slow cooker tastes much better than food cooked in a microwave, right? The same concept applies to marketing! The campaigns and tactics that take longer yield more profitable results (the slow cooker) versus a few quick wins (the microwave). This requires trusting your marketing partner – but that’s why you did your research before you chose them.
Know your business.
Yes, you know what you do. But do you understand WHY? Before sitting down to hone a marketing message, ask yourself questions like:
- What frustrations does my product or service solve?
- What are my organization’s greatest strengths?
Understanding these questions will lead to much more valuable conversations with your marketing partner.
Know which tools and outside partners you’re already working with.
It’s not fun when I’ve been working with a client for a few months only to discover they’ve been using an email marketing system to send out monthly newsletters I didn’t know about. It makes having a cohesive strategy and message difficult – so please disclose any tools or outside partners you’re working with, no matter how minor it seems.
Know your passwords and account information.
Keeping your login information/passwords in a centralized location is very helpful for both you and your marketing partner – it saves time, especially when using the wrong login/password means getting locked out of your account! If you’re unsure, ask!
I love when clients ask questions that not only challenge me as a creative marketer but also ensure that what they’re doing is in line with the brand vision. Get comfortable with your account manager and don’t be shy about asking questions.
