Here are the most common (paid) ways to advertise online:
Pay-per-click ads (aka PPC)
PPC ads appear above organic search results – prime real estate in front of people already searching for relevant topics.
Banner and display ads
Banner ads (horizontal boxes on top of a web page) and display ads (square/rectangular ads beside content) offer visual (vs. text-based) advertisements.
Social media ads
Social media ads allow more specific targeting and encourage engagement with options to comment/like/share/retweet/pin, etc.
