Rest in peace, Google rankings … there are new search results in town

Jul 14, 2018 3:27:44 PM

Last week, we told you that while SEO is NOT dead, several SEO tactics ARE dead.

This week, we’re telling you your Google rank doesn’t matter anymore.

Google’s new search results consider:

  • Results based on user history
  • Someone who receives Cold Stone Creamery emails and searches “ice cream” will find Cold Stone near the top.

  • Results based on user device
  • A search for “butterfly garden” on a desktop will find sites about planting butterfly gardens.
  • That search on a mobile device will find the closest butterfly garden or local greenhouse that sell butterfly garden plants.

Place and time

  • Results based on user location and time of search
  • Someone searching “pizza restaurant” at 1:00 am will yield the closest open pizza place.
  • That search at noon will likely have more results because more pizza places are open at noon.

Long story short: what’s number one in your search results won’t be number one in my search results.

So while we aren’t saying keyword rankings are dead, we are saying they shouldn’t be your primary performance metric.
