Ed, I agree on the set expectations - if they had said the only way to have a seat is to pay for it (but they don't). The one thing I should probably be clear on as well is that this was a completely empty row - not an empty seat next to someone who had paid for it. As to pricing integrity and and airline in the same sentence...sorry, aren't the airlines the ones that came up with load based pricing that has NO transparency what so ever. Thanks for the comments and thoughts

Hey, Dan. I have some mixed feelings about this. I understand your point about your fellow passenger paying for a guaranteed seat and you taking your chances, but there is something to be said for an airline sticking to its pricing integrity.
Would you have felt differently if you were the one in the exit row and suddenly you have some unexpected company? What if you we in an exit window seat with someone in the aisle and a person decide to take the exit middle seat?
The key of course is expectations setting. JetBlue feels it is selling access to the exit row at a higher price. They should make it clear that it is not just a guaranteed exit row, but that you will be unable to move there even if the seats are unoccupied. Perhaps this would have set your expectations better.
